THE EFFECT OF SNOWBALL THROWING TEACHING (STT) TOWARD STUDENTS' SPEAKING SKILL AT ELEVENTH GRADE AT SMAN 25 BATAM

Abstract

This study aims to know the effect of the snowball throwing teaching method on the speaking skill of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 25 Batam. Conducted from july to august 2024, the research involved 60 students divided into two groups: an experimental group taught using the snowball throwing method and a control group taught using the role-play technique. Each group consisted of 30 students, selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected through the speaking tests, pre-tests and post-tests, and the results were analyzed using a t-test. To ensure the experimental and control groups were drawn from populations with the same variance, a homogeneity test (F-test) was applied. The findings indicated that the tcount value (3.59) was greater than the t-table value (2.048) at 5% significance level with 28 degrees of freedom, leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho). These results indicates that the snowball throwing teaching method significantly improved the students' speaking skills compared to the role-play technique used in the control group. In conclusion, the snowball throwing teaching method proved to be an effective method for enhancing the speaking skill of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 25 Batam.
