dc.description.abstract This research focuses on Ruby, the main character in the movie CODA (2021), and her negative politeness strategies. Identifying the most frequently applied negative politeness strategies and understanding the many kinds of strategies used in Ruby's conversations are the aims. Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory of politeness presents a conceptual framework for this study. It focuses on negative politeness strategies, which concentrate on avoiding imposition and respecting the hearer's negative face. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method by collecting and analyzing Ruby's dialogue in the film "CODA" with using the official script. The researcher collected the data through documentation method and analyzed the utterances using Brown and Levinson’s ten sub- strategies of negative politeness: being conventionally indirect, question or hedge, be pessimistic, minimize the imposition, apologize, give deference, impersonalize speaker and hearer, stating FTA as general rule, nominalize, and go on record as incurring a debt. en_US
