This research deals with the appraisal of The Pursuit of Happyness Movie directed by Gabriele
Muccino and written by Chris Gardner. The purpose of this research was to analyze the appraisal of the
main character, such as attitude, affect, judgment, appreciation, engagement, monogloss, heterogloss,
graduation, force, and focus, also to find the types of appraisal systems used by Chris Gardner. In the
writing of this research, the writer used qualitative method. The writer used the theory of Martin &
White (2005) to analyze the appraisal. The writer collected the data from The Pursuit of Happyness
movie video as the primary data. Then, for the secondary data sources from The Pursuit of Happyness
movie script. The data collection in this research was done by watching a movie and downloading the
movie script before conducting the analysis of the dialogue. There were 20 data found. The data found
that there were 17 data of attitude, 6 data of Engagement, and 3 data of Graduation. This research
concluded the most common attitude used by Chris Gardner is an attitude of judgment with 10 data. |
